Google Workspace: Integrating NotebookLM for Enriched Gemini Responses

Google Workspace users are set to benefit from a significant enhancement as NotebookLM can now be added as a source directly within the Gemini app. This integration promises to deliver more in-depth and relevant responses from Gemini, grounded in the specific knowledge bases users have cultivated.
Initially available to consumers, this powerful functionality is now expanding to include Enterprise and Education users across all age groups, providing a seamless way to combine organised research with advanced generative AI capabilities.
NotebookLM serves as an invaluable tool for synthesising information from extensive document collections. This includes diverse formats such as PDFs, Google Docs, and more, all while maintaining clear, citable sources. By directly integrating these meticulously crafted notebooks into Gemini, users can effortlessly build upon their deep, specific knowledge. This synergy allows Gemini to provide more pertinent responses, leveraging its advanced conversational and content creation abilities with greater accuracy and context.
Users can now ask Gemini to perform a range of tasks informed by their NotebookLM content, including:
For Google Workspace administrators, understanding how to manage this new feature is crucial. The ability for users to add notebooks as a source within Gemini is controlled by the NotebookLM service setting within the Admin Console. It is important to note that this functionality is not governed by the Gemini app service setting. Therefore, NotebookLM must be actively turned on for end users to access this integration feature within Gemini.
Administrators should also be aware of compliance certifications. When NotebookLM features are utilised within the Gemini app, that usage is subject to NotebookLM's specific compliance certifications. These certifications may differ from those applicable to the Gemini app itself. Administrators are advised to review the distinct compliance certifications for both NotebookLM and Gemini to fully comprehend the coverage pertinent to their organisation. Further details are available in the Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub.
For end users, adding NotebookLM notebook(s) to a chat in Gemini is straightforward: simply select NotebookLM via the “+” button in the prompt box. Naturally, users must have NotebookLM access enabled by their administrator to utilise this feature.
The gradual rollout of this feature commenced on January 20, 2026, and may take up to 15 days for complete visibility across Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. This update is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
